When buying truck tyres, have you ever heard advice like:

"Always buy the highest PR you can get ! "

It might sound reasonable, but in reality, this is a common misconception.

What is "Ply Rating" (PR)?

Ply rating (PR) is an important measure of a tyre's strength.

For example: within the same tyre size, a 16PR tyre usually handles heavier loads than a 14PR.

So why isn't "higher PR" always better?

Higher rolling resistance → more fuel consumption.

A thicker, stiffer tyre increases friction with the road, leading to higher fuel use.

Less comfort.

A harder sidewall absorbs fewer road shocks, making rides bumpier — especially on rough roads.

Wasted extra cost.

If your truck doesn't need extra load strength, paying for higher PR tyres is simply unnecessary spending.

Handling risks at high speed.

Overly stiff tyres can make your vehicle less responsive, especially during emergency maneuvers.

How to choose the right ply rating?

Understand your real load requirements.

Check your vehicle manual or nameplate for rated and maximum loads.

Think about your driving conditions.

1. Light/medium loads, urban or mid-distance logistics: tyres with moderate PR (like 14PR) balance cost and comfort.

2. Heavy loads, long-distance,or mining: tyres with higher PR (16PR and above) for extra strength and durability.

Seek professional advice.

Some suppliers may even tamper with PR markings to meet market demand without any change of the tyre inner construction.  Always choose the reputable suppliers.
