Most people think a worn-out tyre is just waste — but actually, tyres can be recycled through a process called pyrolysis. Here’s how it works and why it matters:
1. How tyres are recycled
Old tyres are heated in a special oxygen-free environment (pyrolysis).
Under high temperature, the rubber breaks down into useful materials:
Tyre-derived oil
Carbon black
Steel wire
Gas for energy use

2. Where the oil goes
The oil produced (about 40–45% of the tyre’s weight) has many uses:
Fuel for cement kilns and steel plants
Power for ships and heavy generators
Feedstock for the chemical and rubber industry

In some cases, it can be further refined into higher-grade fuel
3. Doing it the right way
Recycling tyres is great — but only if done properly.
During the high-heat process, harmful gases like sulfur compounds or dioxins could be released.
